Stefan teaches Caroline about being humanityless. Damon and Elena get some help to retrieve his mother, Bonnie does something unexpected, and Enzo and Alaric make a new odd couple....
Watching Stefan destroy Caroline's control through his rather gruesome "pranks" was almost funny. I have to admit that I was hoping that we were going to have a bloodier repeat of the Dan Scott/Deb Scott feuding from One Tree Hill. Sadly it didn't happen, but that could have been truly funny. Stefan is pissed that Caroline is forcing him to go to a place he never wants to go to because he knows that he'll regret it when he regains his humanity. He doesn't quite seem to have reached the Ripper yet, but I suspect that is because he is so focused on getting back at Caroline that he hasn't gone there. Having the two of them both going out of control is going to be interesting, but not necessarily fun. If Damon is right, getting Stefan to see their mom should help turn both back. You know it won't be that easy though.
Speaking of Damon, he is not having a good time. His brother is reverting back to Ripper, his mother is insane and wants to bring her vampire pals back with her, and Bonnie is barely talking to him. At least he has Elena on his side. If his mother ever figures out that he is lying about bringing her friends back from the prison world, she is going to be seriously pissed. She seems to be controlled, but often the people who are that controlled are the ones who end up doing the worst things. Witness Stefan, Caroline, and Elena when humanityless. He does have the cure for vampirism now, so it will be interesting to see what he does with it.
Honestly, I was shocked at what Bonnie did. I know that what Kai did to her was horrible, but I was not expecting her to do even worse than he did. She deliberately went to the prison world and stayed with him in order to attack him and leave him there. That was very cold. It also worries me. When her actions this week are coupled with her near loss of control last week, a very worrisome picture of someone who is unbalanced and powerful begins to show itself. The old Bonnie would never have done this. While I get why she did it, I still think it was a bad idea because if Kai ever makes it out of that prison world alive, he will come after her with a vengeance. Of course, that assumes that the vampires haven't already killed him. I do feel sorry for him. I think he has been trying to change and Bonnie was refusing to give him credit for it. I will say that it seemed like she was trying to provoke him in the prison world to justify what she wanted to do.
I'm not sure what to make of Enzo and Alaric teaming up. While it was good that they were trying to help Stefan and Caroline, Alaric was stupid to let Enzo bait him the way he did. Enzo is immortal and doesn't need to worry about a family like Alaric does. My other question is why Alaric seems to care what Enzo thinks of him. That didn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. Of course, it was also ego, so there is that. I was glad when Jo laid into him because Alaric needed the reminder that he has people depending on him.

My Review of The Originals 2.16- Save My Soul
Rebekah runs into control issues, Klaus' control issues assert themselves with a vengeance, we find about how Dahlia controlled Freya, Jackson's control of the wolves is threatened, and Cami is asked to help someone who tests her self-control.
It was interesting to hear Klaus explain (quite loudly) how he views the world to both Freya and Hayley. He sees both Elijah and Rebekah as too willing to trust family, so he feels that he needs to act as a control on their overly optimistic view of family. That certainly explains a lot about why he has done some of the things he has done. Since he needs to protect them from their own "worst" impulses, he feels justified doing whatever needs to be done to whomever it needs to be done to in order to protect them. Couple that with his compulsive need to get revenge on *ANYONE* he feels has defied him and his actions regarding Finn and Kol become a lot more understandable. Then there is what he said to Hayley. He trust no one else, including (presumably) her, to put Hope's safety first, so he will do whatever he needs to do in order to protect her, even if that means undermining Jackson as the Alpha of his pack. Klaus puts everything secondary to protecting Hope. I think he is more freaked out by Dahlia than he is letting on.
Would the wolves really leave Jackson? Since they're all super wolves now, they don't seem to feel as beholden to Jackson, particularly since Klaus is working at making sure that he controls the wolves. Jackson needs to figure out how to walk this tightrope. Klaus doesn't care for him at all and the wolves see him as weak enough to challenge. Hayley didn't have a bad idea going to Klaus for help, but Klaus is not going to reverse course now, not unless Elijah can somehow talk sense into him.
Rebekah is in trouble. The witch whose body she is inhabiting is asserting her own control and Rebekah does not seem strong enough to control her. And with the witch abducting young witches and either killing or marking them, there is trouble afoot, particularly since she now has Davina. Unless I am very much mistaken, those marks she is carving into the young witches' foreheads are the same marks that have been used to channel power from the Originals by Esther and Finn. Channeling that much power from the young witches, particularly Davina, is going to make for a very powerful witch, and that is not a good thing. Rebekah needs to figure out how to get this under control, stat.
Unfortunately, Klaus took an opportunity from her when he snapped Freya's neck. If he had let Freya do the spell, it is entirely possible that Rebekah could have maintained control. Unfortunately, Klaus doesn't trust Freya, so he wasn't about to risk Rebekah's life. I can't exactly say that I blame him given everything. Freya is trying too hard which is making it even harder for Klaus to trust her. If everything she said tonight is true, then her life has sucked beyond the telling of it. Dahlia has been using her and her power to achieve immortality and has put the curse on her that means the Freya is awake for one year out of every 100. I find it interesting that Dahlia also made Freya impervious to any damage or even death. I assume that this is because Freya's power is helping to fuel the spell that keeps them both alive and impossible to kill. I still don't know if Freya can be trusted, but if half of what she is saying is true, Klaus will need her to fight off Dahlia. I am going to assume that Dahlia can work some magic that will be able to kill even Klaus, so the Mikaelson siblings seriously need to work together to keep Hope safe.
Poor Cami ended up spending a lot of time with Vincent, the witch whose body Finn hijacked. Interestingly, Vincent is the husband of Rebekah's body. That was a starting reveal, I must admit. I thought they might be related, but I had assumed brother and sister or something like that. I will say that the time with Vincent seemed to be good for Cami. I think she and Vincent will be able to help each other deal with what happened.

My Review of the Vampire Diaries 6.16- The Downward Spiral
Caroline makes a demand of Elena, Enzo goes after Sarah, Damon and Kai try to get help from Bonnie, Damon finds out the truth about his mother, and Stefan makes a shocking decision....
Caroline wasted no time in making her no emotions presence felt and understood. After snacking on Liam (Remember him? Yeah, me neither...), Caroline made a deal with Elena. If Elena and company made no effort to try and convince Caroline to turn her emotions back on for a year, then she would turn them on herself. However, if they tried *ANYTHING*, she would become their worst enemy. Yeah, you know how that one ended up. Anyone who seriously thought that this would happen needs to get their heads checked. Elena and Stefan are not the sort to just sit around and do nothing. Sure, they might have been able to do it for a while, but not for too terribly long, particularly since Stefan felt responsible for Caroline being in this position in the first place. So naturally the promise was broken before the end of the hour, with...interesting results.
So, Stefan is back to being the Ripper. That is not a good thing. I wonder if Elena will actually be able to turn him back. With both Stefan and Caroline gone over to the no emotions side of vampirism, things are not looking pretty. Damon is not going to be a lot of help at the moment because he is too wrapped up in the fact that his mother is a ripper and trapped in a hell prison like Kai was. I don't see a whole lot of good coming out of any of this. I also suspect that Enzo will be upset that Caroline forced Stefan into a position where he turned his emotions off because he won't be able to use Sarah against Stefan anymore.
You do have to feel for Damon. First, Katherine (the so-called love of his life) rejected him for Stefan and then he finds out that his mother never actually died, but was turned into a vampire. Then to top it all off, his friendship with Bonnie is shattered because he tried to get her to talk with Kai after she explicitly told him that she wanted nothing to do with Kai. Talk about a rough week. I can't blame him for forcing the issue where Kai is concerned. Granted, it wasn't exactly smart, but he is so desperate for answers that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get answers.
I also feel sorry for Elena. She does manage to save Sarah from having her heart cut out, but it is all for naught because Caroline got Stefan to turn his emotions off. And can I just register annoyance that yet again someone accuses Elena of making it all about her? Showing empathy is not making it all about you. Honestly, I get sort of annoyed that Caroline (of all people!) constantly accuses Elena of making it all about her. Ok, enough of that. Not only does Elena lose Stefan to the dark side, but she is forced to break both of Liam's wrists in order to save Sarah from the compulsion that Caroline put him under. With two emotionless vamps running around Mystic Falls, you know that Elena and company are going to have their hands full. Hopefully they can do something to minimize the body count.
Bonnie is definitely a changed woman. I'm not sure if she is more powerful than before, but she is less willing to suffer fools than she was before. When she used her magic to burn the one guy who totally wouldn't take a hint, it was sort of funny, but also a mite disturbing. And when she made Damon experience everything that Kai had put her through, that truly sucked. The two of them had formed such a great bond that I hate to see it destroyed because Damon pushed too hard. Like I said above, I can't blame him for trying, but I also can't blame her for reacting. I just hope she doesn't follow through on her threat to melt of Kai's gorgeous face.
Speaking of Kai, I felt sorry for him. He honestly wanted to apologize to Bonnie, but she was having none of it. He has changed, barely, but he still has made some improvements. Can't blame her for not seeing it, but it still had to suck for him. I do wonder if he'll actually bring Damon's mom out of the hell prison or not. I suspect that the answer is yes, but I hope he has a better sense than that.

My Review of The Originals 2.15- They All Asked For You
Everyone's playing games, so much so that you could be forgiven for losing track of who is allied with who. Klaus, Elijah, witches, Rebekah, and Freya manipulate people like so many pieces on a chessboard....
Klaus is being, well, Klaus. He is so focused on protecting Hope and controlling everyone around him that he can't see any bigger picture. He is continuing his quest to make the wolves guards for Hope. He is very concerned about Finn and what he can do and (naturally) he distrusts Freya, so much so that he even refuses to listen to what she has to say. Can't exactly say I blame him there, but that could be to his detriment. Freya is obviously trying to ingratiate herself to both Klaus and Elijah. Anyone who is trying that hard is not necessarily to be trusted, so naturally Klaus (who sees the worst in everyone) trusts her about as far as I could throw her. Unfortunately for him, Hayley is aware that Klaus is trying to manipulate her and threatens to leave if he continues to do it. Aiden, however, doesn't seem to be quite as sharp. He knows that Klaus is after something, but he seems to fall for Klaus' line about merely wanting to protect Hope. He doesn't see that Klaus is also trying to split the wolves off from Jackson, which is very shortsighted of Klaus. I have a feeling that if anything were to happen to Jackson, the wolves would leave Klaus.
Elijah's manipulations were a bit more subtle. He took Gia to go see a witch to find out more information about the body Rebekah is inhabiting. I found it amusing that he had a more open deception going while also using Gia to play a deeper game. His charms are many and varied. He also has the ability to see the bigger picture that Klaus often misses, which is a part of the reason why (I suspect) Klaus keeps him around. He is also willing to listen to Freya, even as he tells her that he doesn't trust her.
Then there is Freya who seems to be playing multiple games at the same time. She has resurrected Mikael, removed Finn from the witch he was in, and is trying to align herself with her brothers. I get why she is mad at Esther, but I'm not so sure why she is so willing to work with Mikael. Granted, she wasn't around for his depredations in search for his children, but she has to know all the things that he's done. Then again, if she is truly as worried about Dahlia as she seems to be, it is possible that she is gathering any allies she can get her hands on in order to have a chance. If that is what she is doing, she may also want to bring Esther back, unless not being a witch anymore means that Esther is not powerful enough to stand against Dahlia. Also, given her dislike of Esther, it made sense that she would get Finn out of the way, given his closeness to Esther.
Then there are the witches. Turns out the body that Rebekah is inhabiting is an evil witch who kidnaps and kills children. She is so feared that a local coven decided to kill her with a rare poison. Fortunately for Rebekah, she knew what the antidote was and the witch who poisoned her had it in his bag, so she survived. Unfortunately for Rebekah, the host appears to control the body sometimes, as we saw at the end of the episode. That cannot be a good thing.
So the question becomes who can be the best manipulator? Can Freya be trusted? Will Klaus ever start being reasonable and get that it is better to have the wolves as allies rather than slaves? Guess we'll find out....

My Review of The Vampire Diaries 6.15- Let Her Go
Tonight, everyone deals with Sheriff Forbes' death, Damon has flashbacks to his mother's funeral, Kai visits Jo for some help, Bonnie has everything she needs to get back, Caroline has a not unexpected reaction to her mother's death, and Bonnie has an encounter that rattles Damon....
First, let's deal with Caroline. Although she seems to be her normal self, she is heading down the route I predicted last week. By the end of the hour, she had turned off her emotions and snapped Elena's neck in order to get away. Wish I could say I was surprised, but I so was not. Between losing her mom and Stefan basically telling her that the kiss was a mistake, she just couldn't deal with anything. Stefan, the master of bad timing that he is, was too late to stop her. Sigh. Caroline has always been a control freak and this is something that she cannot control and cannot deal with. If someone like that has not emotions and no control and the results could be...interesting.
Aside from Caroline, I think Damon had the worst day. Sheriff Forbes has been a friend of his since the first season, despite everything that he has done. I honestly think that she is one of the two humans that he actually respects (the other being Alaric). Add to that the fact that he kept having bad memories of the time he refused to give the eulogy in his mother's funeral and you can see why this was so hard for him. Before I go any further, I have to express some annoyance that despite having a young actor play Stefan in the flashbacks, Ian still played Damon. Sorry, but Damon is not so much older than Stefan to justify that decision. Totally ruined a wonderful scene because I could only think about this. I did love Damon's eulogy. It was perfect and so beautiful and such a wonderful tribute. His advice to Stefan and comments to Caroline were not as good. I think that his comments were part of what pushed Caroline to turn off her emotions and his advice to Stefan (which Stefan followed) definitely helped push her.
Well, Kai is now in possession of Jo's magic after showing up at her door magically sick. Turns out that merging with the wrong sibling was making him sick. I would assume it is akin to a body rejecting an organ that has been donated. So now Jo is powerless, but pregnant and engaged to Alaric. Hope that works out for those crazy kids. And since Kai is still alive, the prison worlds (yes, plural!) still exist, minus one Bennett witch.
Yes, you read that right, Bonnie is officially back, much to Damon's delight. I loved their reunion. Damon's face lit up with unalloyed joy when he saw her. After everything she went through, it will be nice to get her back. Who knows, she may even be able to pound some sense into Caroline's head before she does too much damage. I am wondering how the Aurora Borealis, which is not exactly an uncommon occurrence, was enough to let her come back home, but I won't quibble. I was very surprised to discover that the occupant of the other prison world was Stefan and Damon's mother!
I was happy that Matt refused to allow Tyler into the funeral while drunk and interested to see him want to become a police officer. Think it'll be a good fit for him. It was also nice to see Elena be a buttress of support for both Damon and Caroline. Too bad she couldn't stop Caroline from becoming emotionless.

It was perfect and so beautiful and such a wonderful tribute. His advice to Stefan and comments to Caroline were not as good. I think that his comments were part of what pushed Caroline to turn off her emotions and his advice to Stefan (which Stefan followed) definitely helped push her.
Well, Kai is now in possession of Jo's magic after showing up at her door magically sick. Turns out that merging with the wrong sibling was making him sick. I would assume it is akin to a body rejecting an organ that has been donated. So now Jo is powerless, but pregnant and engaged to Alaric. Hope that works out for those crazy kids. And since Kai is still alive, the prison worlds (yes, plural!) still exist, minus one Bennett witch.
Yes, you read that right, Bonnie is officially back, much to Damon's delight. I loved their reunion. Damon's face lit up with unalloyed joy when he saw her. After everything she went through, it will be nice to get her back. Who knows, she may even be able to pound some sense into Caroline's head before she does too much damage. I am wondering how the Aurora Borealis, which is not exactly an uncommon occurrence, was enough to let her come back home, but I won't quibble. I was very surprised to discover that the occupant of the other prison world was Stefan and Damon's mother!
I was happy that Matt refused to allow Tyler into the funeral while drunk and interested to see him want to become a police officer. Think it'll be a good fit for him. It was also nice to see Elena be a buttress of support for both Damon and Caroline. Too bad she couldn't stop Caroline from becoming emotionless.

My Review of The Originals 2.14- I love You, Goodbye
We have a wedding, a death, a resurrection, plotting, scheming, breakups, and makeups. In other words, a typical day in the New Orleans of The Originals.
Hayley and Jackson are officially married and the wolves of New Orleans who are in their packs now are stronger and able to change at will. Given the threat that Dahlia poses, I am not sure they will be as much help as Klaus hopes, but I guess anything is better than nothing. Unfortunately for all involved, this wedding has implications and effects far beyond the newly wedded couple.
Josh and Aiden are coming to grips with what this all means. Aiden sort of broke up with Josh because he didn't want to have Josh get hurt, but (fortunately) Jackson talked him out of it. Watching Aiden go and sit next to Josh at the wedding and take his hand was totally sweet. It was a very small gesture, but one that was fraught with meaning. As I've said before, these two are truly a Romeo and Juliet type couple, hopefully without the double suicide.
The wedding also has massive implications for both Elijah and Klaus. Elijah obviously wants to be with Hayley himself, but he is noble enough to let her have what she wants. Well, either that or he is a martyr. The thing about Elijah is that he is always looking out for the good of others. Klaus, on the other hand, is more worried about making sure that Hope is protected regardless of the consequences to others. In Klaus' view, Jackson is now disposable. Since he was really only needed in order to make sure that the wolves got the power that they needed to protect his daughter, he is now superfluous and can be disposed of whenever Klaus wants to.
The problem with this, as Elijah noted, is that if Jackson is killed, it it entirely possible that the wolves would fall apart and then the protection that Klaus is looking for would evaporate. This is, I think, the crucial difference between how Elijah and Klaus view the world and others. Elijah sees others as people whereas Klaus sees them only as things that will help him fulfill his desires or needs. Once they have done what he needs, they can be discarded. His family seems to be the only people that he does not view in this same way. They seem to be viewed based on whether or not they'll help him. If they will, they stay awake, if not, they are daggered. Sort of the same thing, I guess, but not quite.
I am going to miss Kol. He might be something of an impulsive idiot, but he is lots of fun to have around. Fortunately, he has an escape hatch in the form of being a witch. As Rebekah noted, if they consecrate him, he will join the Ancestors and can be brought back later. I so hope that they bring him back before too long, if only for Davina who has precious little that has gone right in her life. And I am glad that, when he died, he had his family around him like he wanted.
Freya brought Finn back to life using the pendant she gave him. I am still trying to figure her out. She is clearly terrified of Dahlia which makes me think that she can be a useful ally for Klaus and Elijah, but she is also working with Finn who is trying to kill his siblings. She clearly needs the help of her siblings to protect both herself and Hope from Dahlia, but I wonder if she might try and cut a deal with Dahlia where she gives Dahlia Hope in exchange for her own freedom. There is also the question of whether or not Finn will work with Klaus and Elijah against Dahlia or if he'll maintain his vendetta against them as vampires. Yeah, messy.

My Review of The Vampire Diaries 6.14- Stay
Caroline deals with her mother’s impending death with Stefan’s help, Sheriff Forbes asks for Damon’s help with some unsolved cases, Elena tries to ensure Jeremy’s future away from Mystic Falls, and Enzo continues to be himself.
I found it highly amusing that so many of Mystic Falls' unsolved murders were Damon’s fault and that he freely admitted it to Sheriff Forbes. She also seemed somewhat amused. So when she broke out the file about the death of Elena and Jeremy’s parents, I can’t say I was surprised that she suspected foul play given that this is Mystic Falls. When it turned out to be nothing more than an accident, she was truly shocked. After all, as I said before, this is Mystic Falls and a genuine accident or death by old age is about as rare as a virgin riding a unicorn.
I think that is one of the things that made her death so heartbreaking. Like Joyce Summers’ death on Buffy, you had a perfectly natural death in a city that has mystic or supernatural deaths on a daily basis. So to have something as mundane as cancer kill someone is almost incomprehensible.
I am seriously worried about Caroline over the next several episodes. She wasn’t with her mom before she ended up in the hospital, so you know she is going to beat herself up over that. Given the vampiric ability to turn off emotions, I am half afraid she is going to turn hers off to avoid dealing with them and we will end up with a situation similar to Elena after Silas killed Jeremy in season 4. I’m not sure what Caroline would do in that sort of situation, but I am sure I do not want to find out.
I am glad that Damon was with the Sheriff when she slipped into unconsciousness. I actually half expected her to collapse in her office after Damon left her to get the car, so I was pleasantly surprised when she didn’t. Damon obviously cares for her deeply and did everything he could to help her out. I am a little worried about how he will react to her death, but I am hoping that he will be able to hold it together, because if both he and Caroline lose it at the same time, this is going to get awfully messy.
I am glad that Jeremy decided to be a hunter. I don’t think he would be able to settle into a “normal” life after his experiences in Mystic Falls. He knows too much about what goes bump in the night to be able to truly live a normal life. I did find it extremely amusing that Elena and Damon compelled his way to an early graduation and into the art school. It’s about time this show dealt with the fact that the gang’s school attendance has been, at best, spotty. When Elena discovers that Jeremy is hunting and that Alaric knew about it, fireworks will occur. I so want to see that. I was also highly amused by the scene where Jeremy and Elena shared a joint and she got the munchies.
Steroline is apparently on. They kissed, but I don’t know if she’ll be in a place to be in a relationship after just losing her mother. I am half wondering if she is going to somehow blame Stefan for keeping her away from her mother. Granted, that is irrational, but no one is particularly rational after losing a parent, particularly a control freak like Caroline.
Enzo continues his mission to get revenge, threatened Jeremy, hit Matt with a car, and then revealed his vampirism to Sarah. ‘Nuff said.
